Amy Murphy
Bookkeeper and VAT Return Manager
FMAAT, AAT
My experience
Before entering the world of accounting, I spent nearly nine years as a supervisor and assistant manager at a newsagents. At 25, I decided to make a career change, pursuing AAT qualifications up to Level 4. I landed my first office role not long after, primarily working with clients in the pub & hospitality industry, where I gained a solid foundation in bookkeeping, VAT returns, and management accounts for various business structures. Later, I joined a tax consultancy focused on compliance, where I managed payroll, CIS returns, annual Year End accounts, VAT, and Corporation Tax returns. I worked with a diverse client base, including property investment firms, construction companies, and consultants. Since joining Whitley Stimpson, I’ve continued to grow, drawing on my previous experience to provide tailored support to my clients. I’m now proud to be an FMAAT member, having achieved my AAT qualifications.

As the VAT and Bookkeeping Manager at Whitley Stimpson, I handle everything related to VAT returns, including preparing, reviewing, and addressing queries, as well as overseeing VAT registrations. I also assist clients with bookkeeping and provide support across various software platforms like Xero, QuickBooks, VT+, and Sage. In addition to being Xero and QBO Advisor certified, I prepare management and Year End accounts whenever I have the opportunity.
Why Whitley Stimpson?
After moving to Banbury from Bristol in January 2024, I was immediately drawn to the dynamic and welcoming environment at Whitley Stimpson. From the outset, the staff were friendly and inviting, and I was impressed by how much the firm invests in its team—not only in terms of work but also with continuous professional development and team-building opportunities. I love the variety my role offers, from working with well-established farmers to helping emerging tech businesses. Building strong relationships with clients is important to me, ensuring they see me as approachable and supportive, rather than just someone asking for their paperwork – I feel like Whitley Stimpson embodies that.
What matters to you?
Delivering excellent service is something I deeply care about—I’m the person who will remind clients about deadlines, whether they like it or not! I’m committed to making sure they fully understand processes and feel comfortable asking any questions, no matter how small. Outside of work, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential. I enjoy gaming, badminton, crocheting, model building, and going to the gym. I also love travelling and unwinding with my partner, whether we’re watching anime or diving into a great fantasy or sci-fi series on Netflix.
