The UK is being told to prepare for every possible Brexit outcome, including a no deal one.
Although this is not the preferred option for most MPs, it is default protocol and if nothing replaces Theresa May’s deal, the UK will leave the EU automatically on 29th March.
In preparation for this, HMRC have been writing to VAT-registered businesses that trade only with the EU advising them on three vital steps:
- Register for a UK Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number. An EORI number is needed to continue to import or export goods with the EU after 29th March 2019 (in the event of a no deal Brexit). It is also necessary before businesses can apply for authorisations to make customs processes easier. You can register for your EORI number here.
- Decide if you want to hire an agent to make import/export declarations for you or whether you want to make them yourself (using HMRC bridging software). In both scenarios, you will need to find out exactly what information is needed from you.
- Contact the organisation that moves your goods to establish whether you need to supply additional information for safety and security purposes.
There is further advice available on declarations here and support and guidance for preparing your business for the UK’s EU exit is available here.
